Back Bay

Back Bay

Neighborhood Description

Boston’s Back Bay is a historic district recognized for its stately Victorian-era brownstones and is one of the most scenic residential areas in Boston. Back Bay is mostly a mixture of condominiums, single families, and rental apartments. Newbury Street has long been home to Boston’s most upscale retail shops and restaurants. Initially conceived as a residential-only area, commercial buildings were permitted from around 1890, and Back Bay now features many office buildings, including The John Hancock Tower, Boston’s tallest skyscraper.
Back Bay borders the Charles River and the Boston Public Gardens. The Esplanade along the Charles provides residents with picturesque walking, running and biking trails. The Boston Public Garden was the first public botanical garden in America and remains one of the most beautiful landmarks in Boston. The Commonwealth Ave Mall was among Boston’s first planned public spaces. Construction began in 1856 that lasted through the Gilded Age (1870’s – 1900). Inspired by the elegant tree-lined boulevards of Paris, this picturesque street was built to promote health and wellness.
